Markham, ON, November 28th, 2008. Carsen Medical Inc. has announced exclusive distribution of the smallest capsule solution with the longest life cycle and highest image resolution - the MiroCam® Capsule Endoscopy system from IntroMedic . An orally ingested capsule designed to capture and transmit images of the digestive tract, MiroCam offers patients a comfortable alternative to traditional endoscopic procedures while providing physicians more options to visualize intestinal disease.
The MiroCam Capsule Endoscopy system consists of a single ingestible capsule equipped with an embedded camera powered by 6 LED light sources. A receiver utilizing patented E-Field Propagation as the transport medium is worn by the patient and a MiroView® PC-based workstation is used to compile images into a media file for viewing and editing.
“IntroMedic brings to market the most competitive capsule solution available to the Canadian G.I. community”, states Carsen Medical President, Bill Vella, “the combination of the smallest capsule, the longest life cycle and sharpest resolution pushes the boundaries of what we’ve come to expect from this technology – it is a perfect complement to Fujinon’s DBE® Double Balloon Endoscopy system for diagnosis and treatment of small bowel disorders.”
Once ingested, the MiroCam operates by capturing over 188,000 images as it passes through the natural phases of digestion. A small rechargeable receiver is capable of storing these images as the patient goes about a normal routine. The data is transferred via high speed USB 2.0 connection at the end of a cycle to the MiroView workstation where a streaming media file is generated to present a seamless video of the procedure.
The system also offers a pocket PC real-time viewer option which enables the patient and physician to obtain immediate feedback from the camera to determine the rate at which the capsule is progressing and its location relative to the anatomy. Real-time visuals provide the physician the opportunity to make observations of the mucosa in areas of interest as the capsule passes through them– similar to traditional endoscopy.
The MiroView workstation includes tools to assist in understanding the capsule location, specific pathology (i.e. bleeds) , zoom and still capture. The system can also compile video into multiple streams enabling faster and more relevant visualization for the physician.
The MiroCam capsule endoscopy system includes the highest image resolution available today, 102,400 pixels / image (320x320) through a precision lens and the highest frame rate at 3 images per second. Due to efficiencies in design, the MiroCam also supports the longest operation time of 11+ hours. It is not uncommon for the capsule to not reach the ileo-cecal valve in 8 hours which is the standard operating of competing solutions.
